Girls volleyball: Stratford loses to Barlow in quarterfinals

Stratford High’s third-seeded girls volleyball team lost to visiting Joel Barlow, 3-0, in a Class L quarterfinal round match in the Needham Gymnasium on Saturday.

Coach Lisa Buccieri’s Red Devils closed out its finest season ever with a 20-4 record.

Julia Torreso had three kills and nine digs.

Jackie DeCrescenzo had seven digs and six assists.

Gillian Mariconda had five digs.

Sixth-seeded Barlow used 16 kills from junior outside hitter Kiara Robichaud and another 14 from senior middle hitter Ava Campano to advance. The 23-3 Falcons from Redding will meet seventh-seeded Woodstock Academy (19-3) in Wednesday’s semifinal.

It will be in the 11th semifinal round appearance for head coach Carol Asplund, now in her 13th season. Barlow has reached four finals since 2007, but is still seeking its first title.

The Falcons, who beat Stratford earlier this season, have captured the last three South-West Conference championships. Barlow got 39 assists from setter Caitlyn Colangelo.
