While the venerable Sterling House Community Center is not quite new, it felt like it was last Friday.

Town residents, government officials and volunteers gathered on Oct. 13 at the newly renovated Sterling House. The opening of the renovated community center was the culmination of more than 10 years of work.

The grand-reopening coincided with Sterling House’s 85th anniversary celebration weekend, which ran from Friday to Sunday.

About $2.4 million in state grants helped pay for much needed refurbishments with a four-story elevator being the most significant change. A state code-compliant staircase, added storage space and better access to the community food pantry is also a big change.

“This is a  huge improvement for the community at large. We can have any program on any floor of the house because we know that it’s accessible now,” said Sterling House Executive Director Amanda Meeson. “In addition to the elevator, the food pantry is renovated. You’ll also see a new front lobby and reception area.”

The lobby and main desk have also been upgraded and Meeson’s new office space is in the former porch area on the side of the Main Street building. A faux door near her desk marks where the pre-renovation rear entrance was.

Renovations began in the spring and were done to match what was already in place at the historic building.

“It will be very exciting to not have all the construction happening and see…just how that expands and how we serve the community,” Meeson said.
