Girls volleyball: Stratford upended by Newtown High

Stratford High’s girls volleyball team showed fight, but despite winning the first game, fell 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-22) to host Newtown on Wednesday night.

Stratford is 11-2 and Newtown improved to 9-5.

The fourth game featured eight ties, the last of which came at 12-12.

The Red Devils hung close the rest of the way.

Down four points and with the game at match point, coach Lisa Buccieri’s Stratford squad extended things behind some strong defensive play.

Gillian Mariconda’s kill just inside the line made it 24-21. Jackie DeCrescenzo’s diving save led to another point.

Newtown ended it on one of Sarah Dowling’s game-high 14 kills, despite a sliding play by Madyson Perley to initially keep the last volley alive.

Mariconda had three service points, an ace, three kills, two digs, one block and five assists.

Samm Carbone racked up 10 service points, four kills, three digs, a pair of blocks and an assist.

Julia Torreso had a trio of service points, an ace, five kills and six digs.

Brianna LaPia led Stratford with 13 digs, and DeCrescenzo had six digs.
