Bunnell to host gubernatorial forum

Bunnell High School will play a significant role in the gubernatorial race as it hosts a forum on Friday featuring some of the candidates.

The Governor’s Information Forum will be held from 12:30 to 2:05 p.m. Friday at BHS. The event is open to BHS students and faculty.

The forums are a series of eight scheduled debates among candidates for governor. They will be held at schools to facilitate participation by younger voters, according to forum creator Mark Greenstein.

Eight committed and exploring candidates are participating in the Bunnell forum as well as two other forums before Thanksgiving. Four are Republicans, three are Democrats, and one is a Libertarian.

Greenstein said the forums present an opportunity to involve students while letting gubernatorial campaigns get their message out early.

“The students run these,” Greenstein said. “We’ve got very mature kids operating the cameras, timing the candidates, and asking the questions. It’s great for democracy, and excellent for the students.”

In all, there will be eight forums. Morgan and Sheehan high schools are the other public high schools to host forums. Two private schools — The Gunnery and Hotchkiss — and three universities — Yale, Central Connecticut State and Eastern Connecticut State — will also host forums.
