3 drivers ticketed in Merritt crash

All three drivers involved in a crash that closed the northbound lanes of the Merritt Parkway around 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 2, were issued citations.

State Police said a 2002 Mitsubishi Gallant, driven by 25-year-old Joshua Brito of Dover, N.H., was being pushed in the right lane by a 1996 Ford Explorer driven by George Maldonado, 49, of Spring Street in New Haven.

When those two vehicles came to a stop, the Explorer was struck from behind by a Saab driven by 41-year-old Celeste Potter of Canfield Road in Seymour.

All three drivers and two passengers were taken to Bridgeport Hospital or St. Vincent’s Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Initial reports were that at least one car had rolled over and multiple people had been ejected. That was not the case.

Potter was ticketed for failure to drive a safe distance apart.

Maldonado was ticketed for illegal towing or pushing.

Brito was ticketed for operating too slowly.
