Retired teachers celebrate the holidays

Retired teachers from Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Milford, Monroe, Shelton, Stratford and Trumbull celebrated the holiday season at Testo’s Restaurant in Bridgeport earlier in December.

With 747 paid members, GBRTA (Greater Bridgeport Retired Teachers Association) welcomed two newcomers to the group. President Bob Pitzschler, a retired science teacher, introduced Carol Bertilso, formerly a Fairfield kindergarten teacher, and Rita McDougall Campbell, formerly the Trumbull High School A-House principal.

Deborah Ruby, a retired science teacher from Bridgeport, collected donations for the Scholarship Fund raffle. After the luncheon of prime rib au jus, chicken cordon bleu or salmon with dill sauce, Ruby announced that $464 had been raised towards the $15,000 in scholarships that are awarded to students in the spring from the 15 public high schools in the member towns.

Member services chairperson Peggy Vaugh from Trumbull displayed poinsettia plants that would be delivered to homebound members during the Christmas season, and Pat Yacovacci from Bridgeport arranged bags of non-perishable food donations for Merton House under one of Testo’s Christmas trees. Yacovacci announced that Merton House always needs plastic bags, as well.

Entertainment was provided by the Trumbull Chamber Singers, directed by Trumbull Teacher of the Year Anne Tornillo. GBRTA first vice president RoseMarie D’Aquila, retired math teacher, introduced the group, and they performed seven holiday compositions, including “Deck the Halls” and “Up on the Housetop.” The performance featured “Let It Go” from the movie Frozen, with Carlos Perez on vocal percussion and Michael Lepore on shaker.

The next general meeting of GBRTA will be held in April.
