New Stratford health care school accepting applicants now

The American Institute of Healthcare and Technology (AIHT) is now accepting enrollment for January 2013 classes. In April 2012 AIHT leased 4,327 square feet at 300 Long Beach Blvd. from Stratford Executive Park Inc. to establish a health care and technology school and classes are ready to begin.

According to an announcement last week, the institute says it has completed refurbishing the premises and has secured the necessary approval from the Connecticut State Office of Higher Education, enabling the school to open on time for 2013 classes.

The allied health care school will offer vocational training for a variety of medical technician and medical assistant positions, helping people choose or modify their careers in health care, according to an announcement the institute made in June.

Stratford will be the first Connecticut location for the school, founded in Piscataway, N.J., in 2006. At the time of the June announcement, institute spokesman Shah Ravish said, “We selected this location because of the competitive rent and the success of nearby Porter and Chester Institute, which shows there is a market for vocational schools in the greater Stratford area.”

Last week’s release offered more details about programs of study being offered. Some of the programs offered at AIHT include medical sssistant, medical billing and coding, pharmacy technician, EKG/phlebotomy, ultrasound technologist, computer application programming, and echocardiography technology. According to Shah, AIHT is different from other Fairfield County health care schools because of the courses and the number of major diagnostic programs available in one place.

With day, evening and weekend classes available, AIHT is aimed at high school graduates, the unemployed or anyone wishing to enter the health care profession but who does not have the time or resources to attend a traditional four-year college or university. Courses range in duration from one month to 20 months, and once course work is completed, the student is ready to take the national certification test.

Once certified and employed, the student can earn anywhere from $30,000 to $74,000 a year, depending on the chosen profession.

AIHT may be contacted at 203-870-8400 and online at
