STARS president opposed to dog park next to Animal Control

Photo updated June 9. Updated June 6 5:55 pm: The president of the Stratford Animal Rescue Society (STARS), Marjean O’Malley, said that a dog park adjacent to the Animal Control Facility, a plan for which is working its way through town committees and is on the Town Council meeting agenda Monday June 9, will negatively affect the work that her volunteer organization performs.

She said that it will interfere with the socialization, exercise and training programs that STARS conducts in order to get the animals that are sheltered at the Animal Control facility ready for adoption. One of STARS goals is to get animals adopted and saved from euthanization.

O’Malley said she also has “serious concerns” about whether or not a dog park at that location, would be consistent with or conflict with specifications laid out for The Greenway.

Planning Commission Chairman Chris Silhavey said that he was not aware of O’Malley’s concerns, but his commission discussed the issue of The Greenway and made a judgment that there would be no conflicts, and the commission found the dog park plan to be consistent with the Town’s Plan of Conservation and Development.

O’Malley said that she told Chief of Staff Marc Dillon that she has some concerns about the dog park location proposal, but she did not have further conversations with him.

Dillon said that he favors O’Malley’s views being expressed and considered. No one, to this point, has expressed that the location would not be good for the dogs at the control facility, Dillon said.

On the question of the appropriateness of locating the dog park at the Greenway, Dillon said that the town attorney reviewed the location and came back with no concerns, and the Planning Commission would be the body to study any possible issues with the Greenway.
