Mayor John A. Harkins Monday officially announced plans to replace and preserve the historic sundial atop Shakespeare Theatre. Timex Group USA of Middlebury has agreed to pay for the manufacture and installation of a replica of the original timepiece.
Timex is developing a plan to preserve the original sundial.
“Shakespeare Theatre is on the verge of a long-awaited rebirth,” Harkins said. “Thanks to the bi-partisan involvement of the Town Council and community leaders, I sincerely believe we’ll succeed in the revitalization of this beautiful property. What better way to marry our vision for the future with Stratford’s rich history than to replace the theater’s aging sundial while preserving the original fixture for posterity? Many thanks are owed to Councilman Matt Catalano for brokering this agreement, as well as to Timex for their generous sponsorship.”
The new sundial will be designed, manufactured and installed by Global Scenic Services of Bridgeport, with an unveiling event to occur in October.
Timex is consulting on the design and engineering for the timekeeping functionality.
Catalano said that Timex’s involvement gives the Town’s latest efforts regarding the theater legitimacy.
“I am extremely pleased that Timex is involved in our efforts to make Shakespeare Theater a productive asset for this community. It speaks to the legitimacy of our process to be able to attract this level of corporate support,” Catalano said. “We are all excited about the official start of ‘Festival!’ time.”
“Timex is honored to reprise our role in the rebirth of the Shakespeare Theatre and contribute to the revitalization of a Connecticut community,” said David Griffith, communications manager for Timex Group USA. “Following in the footsteps of the original sundial donated by Timex in 1956, the new timepiece will appear and function as the original during its first years, including the very unique calibration to Eastern Daylight Saving Time to correspond with the theater’s summer season.”
