Extra funds to elevate Honeyspot School

Honeyspot School is getting a $2-million lift — literally.
The Town Council Monday approved increasing the cost of the project from $13.85 million to $15.85 million.
That increase is still subject to a revised bonding ordinance reflecting the increased amount, which could appear on the agenda for the council’s regular March meeting.
Also approved was an increase of $68,750 in the contract with architect Tai Soo Kim.
The changes are necessary to meet new flood requirements from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection that will require raising the school two feet.
Olga Pena, president of the Parent-Teacher-Student Association at Stratford Academy, urged the council to approve the funding, saying, “We may never see this opportunity as a community.”
The state will reimburse a portion of the total cost of the project, but that percentage has lessened with the state’s economic condition.
Walter P. Rimkunas accused the town of increasing the cost of the Honeyspot project by dragging its feet on the project, and said he hoped the same path would not be followed with the pending work at Stratford High School.
Councilman Stephanie Philips (D-2nd District) said the town was being proactive in pursuing the change to the Honeyspot project before construction began.
