Two Trumbull cops hurt subduing Stratford man who threatened to kill woman

Trumbull police, assisted by an off-duty Meriden officer, arrested a Stratford man who had threatened to kill his children's mother Tuesday.

According to reports, police received a 911 call from a Trumbull woman reporting that her children's father, Michael Elliott, 47, of North Ave., Stratford, had shoved her to the ground and threatened to kill her, then fled the scene on foot.

The first arriving officer spotted Elliott on Daniels Farm Road near Park Street. As the officer attempted to detain him, Elliott began yelling at the officer and running away. The officer chased Elliott, who then turned and charged at the officer, swinging his fists and striking the officer in the face.

An off-duty Meriden officer driving past witnessed the incident and got out of his car to assist. The two officers then struggled with Elliott, who was still swinging and punching.

With traffic stopped due to the incident, another motorist pulled his car up behind Elliott, allowing the officers to pin him against the car. The motorist also assisted the officers with Elliott, who was still struggling and shouting obscenities.

Elliott was finally handcuffed with the assistance of two more Trumbull officers. Elliott was not injured, though two of the officers received minor injuries to their face and finger.

During the altercation, a pistol magazine fell from Elliott's pocket. Officers searched him but could not find a gun. A police dog searched the area, but could not locate the pistol. Police said Elliott, a convicted felon, is legally prohibited from owning a gun.

Trumbull police obtained a search warrant for Elliott's North Ave. apartment in Stratford and located a .25 caliber pistol. Upon processing, police found that Elliott was also wanted for assaulting the same woman Dec. 23 2011. In that incident, Elliott allegedly punched her in the face while driving on Hawley Lane in Trumbull, injuring her lip. Elliott fled that incident on foot, too, and had not contacted her until this incident.

Elliott was held on $95,000 bond and charged with interfering, resisting arrest, three counts of assault on a police officer, breach of peace, disorderly conduct, criminal possession of a firearm, assault and threatening. He also was charged with risk of injury to a minor, assault and breach of peace from the Dec. 23 incident.

Elliott was arraigned on Wednesday.
