Car show part of Opening Day at Boothe Park — Sunday, May 20

An antique car owner, a balloon artist, a banjo player, a blacksmith and a sheep shearer are among the attractions at Boothe Park's Opening Day festivities Sunday, May 20.

The annual event is held in celebration of the birthday of Stephen Boothe, one of the brothers who owned the estate during the earlier 1900s.

 

Memorial Day Parade Monday, May 28

Stratford’s annual observance of Memorial Day will be held Monday, May 28.

A ceremony honoring fallen veterans will begin at 1 p.m. at the War Memorial on Academy Hill.

The parade will leave Acadmey Hill at 2:15 p.m., ending at Paradise Green.

All routes will be picked up one day late with Friday's route to be collected on Saturday.

UPDATED: Stratford council passes Raymark resolution

A resolution calling for the elimination of Raymark waste, by transportation or thermo-chemical processes, was unanimously approved Monday, May 14, during the Town Council’s regular meeting.

The local vote was held the same day Stratford’s state legislators announced a bill passed in Hartford seeking sources of funding for the remediation of toxic Raymark waste. [See related story.]

   

Town Council rejects new deal with firefighters

Citing a need for clarification, the Town Council unanimously rejected a tentative agreement on a new contract with firefighters Monday night, May 14.

Making the motion after a half-hour executive session, Councilman Christian Barnaby (R-1st) said the rejection was based on the need for “a clarification of the definition of compensation.”

   

Legislature calls for funding for Raymark cleanup

Legislators on both sides of the aisle Monday praised bipartisan legislation they say will identify sources of funding for future remediation of the Raymark Superfund site in Stratford on the final day of the 2012 legislative session.

Senate Bill 254 was amended by Senate Amendment A, which substituted new language to require the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to submit a report to the legislature’s Environment Committee by Feb. 1, 2013 on any private or public source of revenue that may be available for the purpose of remediating the Raymark Superfund site in Stratford.

   

Stratford Greenway opens Saturday, May 19

The grand opening of the Stratford Greenway will take place Saturday, May 19, at 10 a.m. at the DeLuca Field entry, Main Street.

Mayor John A. Harkins will be among the speakers, as the town takes a first step in the revitalization along the Stratford’s waterfront.

“It is an important first step in revitalizing the town’s waterfront,” Greenway Committee Chairman Joseph A. Vecsey said in a press release. “This will enable Stratford to restore a significant wetland area that will provide an important educational feature as part of that Greenway project. This is a good way to increase the public’s awareness of the environmental value of the Housatonic River and Long Island Sound.”

   

Council to honor Stratford Community Fund, contest winners

The Town Council will have a ceremonial presentation to acknowledge the Stratford Community Fund and the winners of its annual photo contest during its regular meeting Monday, May 17.

“We hope all board members, friends, and supporters can attend,” Councilman Stephanie Philips (D-2nd District) said. “Many folks in Stratford do not know that much of the Stratford Community Fund’s work is in the form of grants that support existing programs or allow residents to participate.”

 

   

Easton tax collector accepts position in Stratford

Long-time Easton tax collector Pat Hildebrand has resigned and accepted a new position as assistant tax collector in Stratford, effective at the end of the month.

Hildebrand worked in the Easton Tax Collector's Office since Sept. 26, 1994. She began as assistant tax collector, was appointed to fill a vacancy when former Tax Collector Wayne Zold left in 1996 and was elected to the position in 1997 and during every municipal election since that time.
