Stratford police arrest man with stolen gun, crack cocaine

Police said a man stopped in Stratford Tuesday, Feb. 26, was later found to have a stolen gun and drugs.

Members of the Stratford Police Narcotics Vice and Intelligence Unit stopped a car driven by 27-year-old Mark. A. Atwater, who police were investigating for alleged drug activity, on Main Street near McPadden Drive.

Atwater was taken into custody for an active re-arrest warrant charging him with failure to appear.

Police said Atwater told them he had a firearm and crack cocaine at his residence on Justice Street. A subsequent search uncovered a stolen 9mm handgun, ammunition and approximately 3.1 grams of crack cocaine, police said. The firearm was reported stolen from Raleigh, N.C.

Atwater was charged with possession of crack cocaine  with the intent to sell, sale and possession of  narcotics within 1,500 feet of  a housing project, criminal possession of  a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, failure to properly secure a firearm, and risk of injury to a minor.

Bond was $150,000 for court March 5.
