Murphy punches ticket to Open

(Mike Suppe) Stratford’s Brandon Murphy took third at the Class M state tournament at 160 pounds.

Brandon Murphy finished third at 160 pounds in the Class M state tournament on Saturday night at Jonathan Law High in Milford, earning a spot in next week’s State Open.

Seeded second, Murphy, a junior, beat Foran’s Beau Garcia, 5-1 in overtime, to notch a third-place finish and punch his ticket to the Open — which begins on Friday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Sophomore Michael LaPia was sixth at 120, dropping a 6-1 decision to Guilford’s Colin Rook.

Stratford finished 20th overall with 39 team points. Ledyard won the team title with 252.5 points, followed by Foran (153), New Fairfield (143) and Avon (142).

Bunnell was 26th with 17 points.
