Penders to be honored

A pair of sports standouts from Connecticut  — Strattford’s  Tom Penders (men’s basketball coach) and Durham’s Jennifer Ackerley (women’s rowing) — will be inducted into the Fordham University Athletics Hall of Fame in ceremonies on Saturday, Jan. 26.
Penders served as head men’s basketball coach from 1978-86, accumulating a 125-114 record in eight seasons at Fordham.
He led the 1982-83 squad to first ever MAAC title and the Rams appeared in five NIT tournaments in his eight years.
Penders, who currently lives in Narragansett, RI, was named New York Metropolitan Area Coach of the Year in 1981.
Accompanying that duo in the Class of 2013 when the Hall of Fame ranks swell by 10 are: Matteo Cucchiara (track & field), Paul Darrigo (baseball), Michael Debany (tennis), Frank McLaughlin (athletic director/men’s basketball) Kerstin Maike Greene (track & field),  Michelle Maguire Kennedy (swimming), Sara Kinney (softball) and Wayne McGuirt (basketball).
The elite group enters the Fordham pantheon to join the likes of such immortals as Vince Lombardi, Frankie Frisch, Wellington Mara and Vin Scully in ceremonies that will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the McGinley Center on Fordham’s Rose Hill Campus in the Bronx.
YES Network’s Yankee voice/ESPN 98.7 radio host Michael Kay will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
