Stratford police arrested a 21-year old man after an armed robbery occurred at a People’s Bank branch on Monday, Jan. 7. Police say that Michael Monroe, 21 entered the Stop&Shop located on 200 East Main Street at approximately 3 p.m. and robbed the branch located in the store.
Witnesses say the suspect fled on foot. He was reported to be a white male approximately 20 years old and was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt.
Officers and detectives responded to the scene and were able to determine that the suspect, later identified as Monroe had stolen approximately $1300 in cash.
Stratford police were able to confirm Monroe’s identity with the assistance of Milford police. According to police, investigators were able to trace Monroe’s whereabouts to the Ramada Inn on Lordship Blvd. where he was subsequently taken into custody.
Police say narcotics were located at the scene of the arrest and much of the money was recovered. No weapon was displayed during the robbery, but police say Monroe implied he had one while committing the crime.
Monroe was charged with second-degree robbery, threatening, possession of heroin, possession of crack cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Bond for Monroe was set at $250,000 for court on Jan. 18.
