Continuing the push to build an off leash dog park in Stratford, the Stratford Dog Park Action Committee went before the town council on Monday evening, December 10th, telling them about the recent accomplishments of the group and to ask the council for their continued support.
Matt DeBernardo, Vice President of the committee, stated that the group has recently become a 501(c)3 tax exempt, non-profit organization and that the group has been working closely with the town to secure a location for the dog park. “Assistance from the Mayor’s office has been instrumental in starting the process to secure State owned land in town that could be used for our vision” DeBernardo said. Council members can be more involved by attending fundraisers and even perhaps assisting the group with applying for federal grants, DeBernardo noted.
Other speakers included Joseph Pedoto, a board member for the SDPAC, who mentioned the benefits of having a dog park in town such as community involvement, the socialization of dogs and providing an outlet for their need to run and be active. Joe Di Julio, a new resident of Stratford, spoke about his experience on the benefits of having a dog park in other places he has lived and spoke highly about the groups fundraising events that he has attended.
The Stratford Dog Park Action Committee has raised close to $7,000 through community support at such events as the October Zombie Pub Crawl, STARS Fall Festival and the recent Pet Photos with Santa for which they partnered with the S.T.A.R.S at their annual wreath sale.
The group has plans for an up coming event, the Winter Wine Down at which there will be around 30 wines available to sample and purchase and a there will also be a silent auction of donated items. The Winter Wine Down is scheduled for March and will be held at the new Riverview Bistro in town. The SDPAC is collecting donated items for the auction and has monetary sponsorship opportunities for local businesses looking to make a tax deductible donation. More information on this event will be available on dogparkstratford.com in the coming weeks.
